‘Continuing To Move Forward’: Napoleon Solo Targets Preakness

Gold Square’s Napoleon Solo will make his next start in the Preakness Stakes at 1 3/16 miles at Laurel Park on May 16, Blood-Horse reports.

Trained by Chad Summers, the son of Liam’s Map is winless in two starts as a 3-year-old. He most recently worked six furlongs in 1:11.42 at Belmont Park on April 24.

"Obviously, you want to see how he breezes next week and see what happens in the [Kentucky] Derby, but for this point in time, you only get an opportunity to run the Triple Crown races one time," Summers told Blood-Horse. "We feel like he's continuing to move forward."

Napoleon Solo broke his maiden by 1 ½ lengths going six furlongs at Saratoga in August, then took the Grade 1 Champagne at Aqueduct by 6 ½ lengths in October. His connections opted to skip the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile to focus on a sophomore campaign.

The gray colt made his season debut in the G2 Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream Park in February, where he broke slowly and rushed up to pressure the leaders under Kendrick Carmouche. The pair faded to finish fifth in the 1 1/16-mile contest.

Summers took Napoleon Solo back to Aqueduct for the G2 Wood Memorial at 1 ⅛ miles, where he set a snappy :22.97, and :47.30 pace before again fading to fifth, this time under Paco Lopez.

Napoleon Solo was purchased by Gold Square for $40,000 from the Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
